Our Prague Weekend

Ahoj!

Being that it was the first full weekend in Prague that we weren't exhausted for, we made sure to take advantage of our time. We lucked out Friday when classes were cancelled to tour the Foreign Ministry, also called Czernin Palace. The tour was brief but allowed us to see the hall where meetings are held, former President Masaryk's apartment, and also where press releases are done. After seeing so much intricate architecture here we weren't as impressed but found interest in the palace's beautiful furniture, chandeliers, and artwork.

Saturday kicked off by touring the Prague Castle. I have to say it is a great destination if you plan on going to Prague. The castle walls hold many sites including the magnificent St. Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane, and a great view among other attractions. Before coming to Prague I pictured a castle like that of the Disney Castle, one building. I learned however that not all castles are that way. No one lives in the Prague Castle anymore but it does hold the State Department. An interesting fact I learned today is that according to the Guinness Book of World Records the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world. Pretty crazy! After some intense shopping in New Town our day came to a close.

Because of my love for zoos I had to go to the Prague Zoo on Sunday. In 2007 the zoo was listed as the 7th Best Zoo in the World by Forbes Traveler Magazine, and I had to agree it was good. The zoo is set on hilly terrain which seemed like a hike at times, but was a nice contrast to being in the city. Some of our favorite animals were the meerkats, polar bears, giraffes, zebras, and ocelots. It was a relaxing day for all of us but unfortunately ended with work for midterms.

  1. The zoo sounds like so much fun! There's a zoo here in London, too that we have seen a few times in passing. A few other people went to the aquarium and we might end up going to the zoo at some point.

  2. I can't wait to go to the zoo! Our trip to Cesky Krumlov was really fun but the zoo is a must see for me next week. How long do you need there? I have the second and third class periods and am wondering if it is possible to do it after class.

  3. I think we were there for about 2 hours but with travel I'd leave a little more time!
